Moss Terrarium

1. WATERING

Watering around 4 times every year with distilled water depends on moss condition. The lid on your jar allows water to cycle itself within your terrarium and retain proper humidity levels, so be sure to leave it on otherwise. You do not want to see more than a little bit of moisture on the interior glass – if excess water droplets build up, remove the lid to evaporate, then replace.

2. FRESH AIR

Even when you have reached this terrarium bliss and do not need to mist as often, it is still important that you open the lid every few weeks to allow fresh air in. Do remember to replace the lid or your moss will dry up very quickly.

3. PLACEMENT

You need to avoid putting it in direct sunlight – this can lead to too much humidity, and mold development. However, although most varieties of moss thrive in shade in their natural habitats, when indoors they grow best in bright artificial light (great for offices!) or indirect sunlight. Shady spots indoors are okay too.

4. PRUNING

Just like with any live plants, it is normal for some areas of your terrarium to thrive and others to need trimming or perhaps replacement. Trim away any pieces that are getting too long to promote fuller re-growth.

Succulent

1. WATERING

Succulents are desert plants, so they don’t need much water. Only water when needed. One or two sprays every 2 – 3 weeks, (may need more frequent watering in summer). Make sure you distribute the water over a wide area without getting water spots. This is because the soil or cactus mix that succulents like to live in drains very quickly. If you dump water into one concentrated spot, it just drains to the bottom without spreading to the rest of your terrarium.

2. PLACEMENT

Place your terrarium where it receives right amount of light. Best place is next to a window. Plants will grow tall or they’ll bend in one direction in search of light. That’s called “stretching” or etiolation and it won’t hurt your plant, it just looks kind of funny. Too little light can also cause your plants to become pale and lose their color.

3. DEAD STUFF

It’s totally natural for parts of your succulents to die. Some leaves, especially near the bottom will die sometimes as new ones grow from the top. It’s important that you try to remove the dead pieces so they don’t sit around and cause bacteria or rot near the roots. Long tweezers come in handy for this.

Air Plant

1. WATERING

Indoor air plant should stay healthy with a watering schedule at least once a week. However, it may be necessary to water more often due to dryer, less humid air caused by air-conditioning or heating. Fill a bowl with water and dunk your air plants. After 10 minutes, remove the plants from the water and spread them on a towel to dry. It the plants still seem wet, turn them upside down to shake water out of their bases, as sitting water can cause rot and damage the plant. You can also mist your plants as needed in between watering, but misting should not be used as a sole source of moisture in most cases.

2. LIGHT

Keep your plant near window, or near an artificial light source. Remember bright light but not direct sun.

3. VENTILATION

Locate your air plant in a well-ventilation area as they love fresh moving air. Never put your air plants in soil, it will harm them!

House Plant

1. WATERING

The roots of house plants need constant moisture, but too much moisture will lead to root rot. Water your plant as soon as the top of the soil has become dry, thoroughly wet the potting mixture and allow it to drain completely. If the leaves begin turning yellow and limp, it’s a sign that may be over-watering or soil is waterlogged due to poor drainage. If this is the case, repot you plant in fresh soil that provides better drainage, making sure to remove soggy, damaged roots with clean gardening shears, and water plant less frequently going forward.

2. LIGHT

Prefer indirect, filtered, or dappled sunlight from a window, as well as fluorescent lighting. If plants receive too much sunlight, however, the leaves will become scorched and begin to shrivel.

3. PUNCHING

Pruning, which means removing dead or damaged growth, and cutting back unruly or unwanted growth, can really help refresh your plants. It allows your plant to put all its energy into new growth, rather than waste energy on old leaves.

If your plant develops brown/yellow tips to its leaves, you can just trim off the brown part with clean scissors. If the whole leaf is brown/yellow, chop it off at the base, as it won’t turn green again.

4. FERTILIZATION

Plants need healthy food to keep their strength and growth.  You can add to the soil to top up nutrients that would be naturally replenished in the wild. House plants use up nutrients at different rates at different times of the year,  most of them grow actively in spring and summer. Frequency of application depends upon plant type and varies from every 2 weeks to once quarterly.

Most houseplants are not actively growing in winter thus do not need fertilization.
